Softball Adds Two to the Win Column Monday

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team picked up two wins Monday, despite some uncooperative weather, to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Warhawks opened with a 5-1 win over Framingham State before topping Hamilton 11-7 in the nightcap.

After allowing a leadoff walk, the Warhawk defense sat the next three batters down in order and the offense went to work. Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) set the tone with a leadoff single to right center. The speedy Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) laid down a fantastically placed bunt and beat out the throw to first as Weidemann motored to third. Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) brought in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field. Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) blistered a ball that quickly shot through the infield and rolled all of the way to wall in left center for a RBI triple and a quick 2-0 UWW lead.

Framingham State responded in the next half inning as one run came around to score on a single through the left side as an announcement came over the PA system indicating all games were being shutdown due to inclement weather. All teams gathered up and headed out to the parking lot where they waiting for approximately an hour and 15 minutes when the game resumed.

The Warhawks picked up a quick out after the delay to head back to the bats. Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) tagged a solo shot to left center to extend the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second for her first four-bagger of the season.

UWW added cushion runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth for the 5-1 final.

Dunning paced UW-Whitewater offensively going 2-3 at the dish with a homer, a double, two RBI and a run scored.

In the circle, Madi DeBennette (Wadsworth, Ill./Carmel Catholic) picked up her first collegiate win with 3.2 innings of shutout relief work. She fanned five while allowing three hits from the 16 batters she faced in the game.

The offensive onslaught continued in the nightcap as UWW put up six runs in the top of the first. Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) and Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) drew bases loaded walks to plate the first two runs. Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) tagged a bases-clearing double to left center for three more before Weidemann knocked in the final run of the frame on a single.

Hamilton worked their way back into the game cutting the lead in half with a three-run third inning.

Roberson got one of the tallies back with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought in Kostroski for a 7-3 lead.

Hamilton, once again, responded in their half of the frame with an RBI single to right center and a two-run blast to left that narrowed the margin to one, 7-6.

A big fifth inning quickly extended the lead back to five. Kostroski hit a liner to right field with two runners on. The outfield dove and the ball bounced passed rolling to the fence for a two-RBI triple. Wickman followed with a single and Anderson knocked a double to left to give the Warhawks an 11-6 advantage.

The final run of the game came on a wild pitch in the sixth for the final score, 11-7.

Kostroski had a monster game for UWW. She was 4-5 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored.

Anderson picked up the win in the circle, striking out three while one-hitting Hamilton in 2.1 innings of relief.
