The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater picked up two wins today in Pensacola, Florida as they defeated the University of Chicago, 6-2, and Carroll University, 10-2. The Warhawks (5-3 on the season) have opened up the first half of the spring games with a 3-1 record.
In the first game against University of Chicago, it was
Max Huseboe (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) on the mound that highlighted the game. Huseboe pitched for 7 straight innings, going a full 6 before allowing his first hit.
With Huseboe getting things down on the mound, the offense was able to get in a rhythm to get some runs. A
Joe Gorden (Fox Lake, Ill./Grant Community) double scored the first two, with
Alex Najera (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) hitting in a third in the 4th. Three more runs in the top of the 8th would all but seal the deal against the Maroons.
Huseboe finished with 7.0 innings pitched, only allowing one hit and no runs. Huseboe only walked one batter while recording 12 strikeouts in his first win of the season.
In the second game against Carroll, the Warhawks only needed one inning to get things going. A three-up-three-down top was followed by a 6 run inning for the Warhawks.
Another two runs in the 4th from a
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) sacrifice fly and a balk score put the Warhawks up 8-0.
With the 8-run lead,
Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York) kept Carroll out of the game with more efficient pitching. Hilker pitched the first five innings, only allowing one hit and one walk. Hilker struck-out 11 Pioneers, earning him his first win of the season.
Carroll found two runs in the 7th inning, but were unable to get anything going in the last two innings, with UW-Whitewater taking the victory.
UW-Whitewater baseball will have a day's rest tomorrow before a top-25 match-up on Thursday. The 25th-ranked Warhawks will take on 11th-ranked Birmingham-Southern in double-header action on Thursday, March 14th starting at 1 pm.
