The No. 7 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team capped the regular season with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) sweep at UW-Stout Friday night.
The Warhawks tied for second in the regular season Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings and secured the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. UWW will have a rematch with the Blue Devils, this time in Whitewater, for the first round of tournament action. That match will be held Tuesday, November 12 at 7 PM in Russell Arena. The winner of the WIAC Tournament will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.
Friday night's win in Menomonie was the 39th consecutive victory for the Warhawks over the Blue Devils. UWW hit .327 in the match while limiting UWS to .147.
The Blue Devils used a four-point run in the first set to take a 13-9 advantage. UW-Whitewater responded with 10 straight to flip the set to 19-13 in favor of the Warhawks. The run was bolstered by three kills from
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and a pair of aces from
Ally Longden (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee).
UW-Stout battled to cut the margin to one, 23-22, but UWW turned away an attack with
Alayna Jansky (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and
Hannah Proctor (Durand, Ill./Durand) teaming up for the block and
Chloe Werner (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) hammering down a kill for the first set victory.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair until the Warhawks ended the set on an 8-2 spurt for the win.
UW-Whitewater used another late push to seal the sweep in set three. Leading by just one, 21-20, a Proctor block was followed up with a Jansky kill. After a Blue Devil point, Proctor and Weinfurt registered back-to-back kills to secure the win.
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) led UWW with 11 kills in 19 attempts without a single attack error - an attack percentage of .579 in the contest. Werner tallied 10 kills while hitting .421 in the match. She added three blocks at the net.
Defensively, Proctor registered six blocks on the night. She added six kills hitting .357 in the match. Jansky recorded a team-high 13 digs followed by 12 from
Jaedynn Evans (Kalona, Iowa/Iowa City Regina).
