Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warhawks' Late Push fended off by Firebirds

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fell to Carthage with a final score of 69-63 in a non-conference matchup. The Warhawks scrapped together a late push, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to the Firebirds.

In the first half, UWW excelled in the paint with 16 points compared to Carthage's eight, but struggled with three-point shooting, making only four of 11 attempts. Carthage held the advantage advantage at the free-throw line where they made five of six attempts.

In the first half alone, UWW's bench contributed significantly with 15 points, helping keep the game competitive despite being out-rebounded 18-14. JT Hoytink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) had 10 of those 15 bench points for the Warhawks.

In the second half, UWW held pace with Carthage as both teams put up 32 points. UWW capitalized on the gritty baskets, scoring seven points off turnovers and adding seven second-chance points.

Despite shooting 9-for-37 from the field and 4-for-20 from three-point range, UWW managed to gain an edge with 11 offensive rebounds. The Firebirds, on the other hand, were more efficient, shooting 9-for-23 from the field and 3-for-9 from beyond the arc, while also converting 11 of 21 free throws.

The Warhawks knocked it down to a 5-point game with 5-minutes to go, but a Carthage 7-0 pushed it back to double digits. The Firebirds struggled from the charity stripe late, only 4-for-11 in the last 3 minutes.

Joey Berezowitz (Burlington, Wis./) and Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) each hit late threes to close the gap, but Carthage kept the distance making enough free throws for the win.

JY Hoytink led the team with 16 points, adding two steals to his line as well. Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) added 14 points of his own, hitting two threes. Joey Berezowitz (Burlington, Wis./) added 8 points and was active on the boards with 5 rebounds, while also providing 2 assists. Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./) was a big part of the Warhawks rebounding, pulling down 10 boards in the contest.

UWW will face off against Hope for the next game in their line-up. The matchup is scheduled for December 6, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the Williams Center
