Warhawks Hold On to 75-72 Win over Aurora

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater survived Aurora 75-72 in a non-conference road bout. The Warhawks fended off a let Spartan comeback, as Aurora's game-tying three at the buzzer went long. 

The Spartans came out & took a 21-9 lead early, but UWW battled back to close down the lead before halftime. Aurora battled in the paint with the Warhawks, but the Warhawks had a slim margin with 20-16. 

In the first half, the Spartans took an early lead over UWW with a 37-30 advantage. Aurora's strong presence in the paint was evident as they scored 16 points in that area, compared to UWW's 20 points. The Spartans capitalized on turnovers, scoring 7 points from them, while UWW managed 5 points from turnovers. 

Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) led the first half scorers with 10 points. Aurora's Dwayne Jervier Jr. added 9 with multiple offensive rebounds. The Spartans also had a slight edge in rebounding, collecting 21 total boards to UWW's 17.

In the second half, UWW bounced back, quickly retaking the lead in the first five minutes. The Warhawks capitalized on turnovers with 14 points from Aurora's mistakes. UWW also dominated in the paint with 26 points compared to Aurora's 18. 

Barker led all scorers, finishing with 26 points & contributed three assists and two steals in the game.

Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./) secured his third double-double of the season, with 22 points and 11 rebounds, with three offensive rebounds. 

Rounding out the Warhawk scorers was Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./) with 15 points. Madson had two three-pointers & seven rebounds on the box score. Isaac Verges (Franklin, Wis.) recorded a team-high five steals to help the Warhawks on the defensive end. 

Up next, the Warhawks will face Coe on November 23, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. for UWW's home opener.
