The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball trailed Cornell College the entire way, but forced overtime in the end. The Warhawks eventually fell to the Rams 75-73 in the first game of the Buzz Levick Tournament hosted by Wartburg.
In the first half, Cornell College led the Warhawks with a score of 34-25. Cornell was efficient from beyond the arc, hitting 5 of 15 3-point attempts, while UWW struggled, making only 3 of 16. Cornell also capitalized on their bench strength, with 18 points.Â
The second half saw UWW outscore Cornell College 42-33, after an improvement from behind the arc. The Warhawks made 6 of 18 threes in the second half. UWW also dominated the boards with a +10 margin (22-12). Cornell College, meanwhile, capitalized on turnovers, scoring 11 points off turnovers and receiving significant contribution from their bench with 11 points. The half featured 4 ties and 2 lead changes, highlighting the competitive nature of the game.
In the added time, UWW and Cornell College both demonstrated defensive fortitude, with each team managing two successful 3-point shots from three attempts. UWW's J.T. Hoytink and
Luke Bara (Waukesha, Wis./Muskego) each contributed with a 3-pointer, with assists from
Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./), helping the Warhawks take a slight lead early in the period.Â
Cornell ended the OT period on a 6-0 run, with two three-pointers to push them over the Warhawks.
Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./) led the Warhawks with his 20 points. Capstran also recorded his second double-double of the season, pulling down a team high 12 rebounds.Â
Collin Madson (Mukwonago, Wis./) had a all-around stat line of 8 points, 5 assists, & 4 rebounds. Madson was a key part of the Warhawks comeback to force OT in the second half.
Luke Bara (Waukesha, Wis./Muskego) added 18 points with 4 three-pointers and
Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) flirted with a double-double with 11 points, 8 rebounds. Barker also dished out 5 assists during the contest.Â
UW-Whitewater will look to rebound against St. Olaf on the consolation side of the Buzz Levick Tournament.Â
