Baseball Falls in WIAC Championship Game

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team fell to UW-La Crosse 7-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship game hosted by UW-Stevens Point Saturday. The Warhawks will await word of a possible at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament with the selection show slated for Monday at 11 a.m. 

Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) opened the scoring with a RBI single that plated Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) in the top of the first. The Eagles responded with a run of their own on a solo homer in the bottom of the frame. 

UWL took the lead in the bottom of the third before extending the advantage to 4-1 in the fourth. 

The Warhawks added to their total with Cootway registering a sacrifice fly that brought in Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) in the sixth to cut the gap to 4-2. 

The Eagles pulled away with runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. 

Scolan led the Warhawks with two of the team's seven hits in the contest. 

Five UWW hurlers saw the action the mound. Brandl tallied the start and suffered the loss in 3.1 innings of work. Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port), Cade Hansen (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley), Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York) wrapped up the game from the mound for UWW. 

The Warhawks are 30-13 on the season. UWL claims the WIAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
