The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team opened the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in Whitewater with a 3-0 win over UW-Platteville Thursday afternoon at the van Steenderen Softball Complex.

The Warhawks advance to face UW-La Crosse Friday at 2 p.m. The Eagles topped UW-Eau Claire 6-2 and UW-Oshkosh 9-5 in nine innings Thursday.

A defensive battle through 4.5, UWW broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth. Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) tagged a one-out double to left field and she advanced to third on a fly out. In the next at bat, a wild pitch had Dunning touching the plate for the 1-0 lead. Delaney Becker (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) kept the Warhawks going with a two-out walk. Maddie Koenings (West Bend, Wis./West) followed with a single and Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) came in to run at second. Eggert's speed came in handy as she came around to score on Krista Sbarra's (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) single up the middle for a 2-0 UWW lead.

UW-Whitewater added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) led off the frame with a walk. Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) singled and Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) followed with a double to left center that made it 3-0.

Koehler and Dunning combined for four of the Warhawks' seven hits in the game.

Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) tossed a gem in the circle pitching a complete game two-hitter. She fanned seven without issuing a walk while blanking the Pioneers.
