Softball Splits with Carroll

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split with Carroll University on the road Wednesday. The Warhawks dropped the opener 3-1 before taking the nightcap 8-2.

A three-run fourth for the Pioneers was too much for UWW to come back from. The first run of the game came on a double steal with a Carroll runner swiping second and the other taking home. The second scored on a wild pitch with the third touching the plate on a groundout.

The Warhawks broke into the scoring colum in the seventh sparked by Grace Wickman's (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) single of the middle. Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) followed with a single down the left field line. Following the second out, Sydney Anderson (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) tagged a single to right center that plated Wickman for the 3-1 final.

UWW registered four hits, all by different Warhawks in the game. Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) suffered the loss in the circle. She struck out three and allowed five hits and two earned runs in the 3.2 innings. Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) blanked the Pioneers in the hit and scoring column the rest of the way.

The UW-Whitewater bats got going in game two as the Warhawks blasted 14 hits.

Carroll took the early lead with a single run in the bottom of the second. UWW responded in the top of the third as Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and came in to score on a Wickman infield single.

UWW took the lead for good with four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Sbarra once again sparked the rally with a lead off single to center field before swiping second. Five of the next six Warhawks reached base moving four baserunners around to score.

The Warhawks added three more on three hits in the sixth bolstered by a Wickman double to right center.

The Pioneers wrapped up the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the seventh for the 8-2 final.

Maddie Koenings (West Bend, Wis./West) was 3-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI while Wickman was 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) improved to 10-0 on the season with the win in 3.2 innings of relief. The Division III leader in earned run average, Hock struck out four without allowing an earned run while scattering three hits in the outing.
