The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater swept UW-Stout in a pair of games on a cold, windy and rainy day in Menomonie. The Warhawks shutout Stout in the opener winning 3-0 before using a late surge to top the Blue Devils 3-1 in eight innings in game two.
Despite the weather, the Warhawk offense broke into the scoring column in the first inning.
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) singled to center field to score
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) and that was all UWW would need.
UW-Whitewater added two more in the fourth on
Meghan Dunning's (Plainfield, Ill./South) RBI base on balls and
Maddie Koenings (West Bend, Wis./West) RBI infield single for a cushion.
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) led UWW at the plate going 2-4. Kostroski was 1-2 with a walk, a RBI and a run scored.
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) teamed with
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) for a gem in the circle. Anderson picked up the win in the combined shutout, allowing three hits while striking out nine in five innings of work. Hock registeredd her fourth save, no-hitting the Blue Devils while fanning two in the final two frames.
It took seven innings for the Warhawks to get on the board but they made it happen. UW-Stout held a 1-0 lead after scoring a single run in the third on a sacrifice fly.
After a leadoff single from Koehler, UWW found themselves down to their final out. Senior
Sydney Anderson (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) tagged a double to right field to push
Belle Lapacek (Downers Grove, Ill./South) over to third. Reeling from the momentum surge, Dunning followed with a RBI single to center to tie the game 1-1.
UW-Stout threated in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third and no outs but Hock and Warhawks got out of the jam with a pair of strike outs and an infield popup.
Another two-out rally led to a pair runs in the top of the eighth.
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) walked and Koehler followed with a triple to right field. Kostroski walked and
Delaney Becker (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) singledd in the next at bat to give UWW a 3-1 lead.
Once again, the Blue Devils threatened, loading the bases with two out but Hock sat the final Stout batter down via strike out to seal the win.
Koehler led UWW at the plate going 2-4 with a RBI and run scored.
Hock came in for the final two innings once again to pick up the win. She struck out four and allowed just two hits to improve to maintain an unblemished record, 11-0, on the season.
