Softball Splits at Stevens Point

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split a pair of games at UW-Stevens Point Tuesday afternoon. The Warhawks dropped the opener 1-0 and won the nightcap 4-3.

The first game of the day was a pitchers' duel as neither team advanced a base runner passed second until the sixth. UW-Whitewater threatened in the top of the frame loading the bases with just one out but the Pointers got out of the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, UWSP led off with a single up the middle. Warhawk pitcher Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) got the first out on a popup that Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) hauled in at shortstop. Anderson sat down a pinch hitter via strikeout but the baserunner successfully swiped second on the 'K'. The next batter singled to right center to drive in the winning run of the game.

Anderson struck out nine while allowing five hits in 6.2 innings of work to suffer the loss in the circle.

The Warhawks got on the board right off the bat in game two. Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) singled up the middle to ddrive in a pair of runs for the early 2-0 lead.

UW-Whitewater added another in the top of the third on Krista Sbarra's (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) RBI groundout to make it 3-0.

The Pointers plated two in the fourth but Wickman responded in the top of the sixth with a solo shot that sailed over the left field wall.

UWSP wrapped up the scoring with a four-bagger in the bottom of the frame but the Warhawk defense held for the 4-3 win.

Wickman was 2-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored to lead UW-Whitewater offensively.

Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) registered the win in relief. She struck out five while allowing a single hit in the final 3.2 innings of the contest. Hock is now 7-0 on the season.
