The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team picked up two more wins in Clermont Thursday. The Warhawks blanked Colby en route to a 1-0 victory before topping Grinnell 4-2 to improve to 7-1 this season.
UWW opened the scoring in the top of the first.
Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) showcased her speed singling the shortstop and beating the throw to first before swiping second in the next at bat.
Ally Dietz (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) walked to put two on. Kiara Kostroski singled on a hard shot up the middle. Ward motored around third and headed for home sliding around the catcher's tag and swiping her hand hand across the plate - safe. That gave UWW a 1-0 lead in the game, and was the only run to cross the plate.
Colby threatened in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single and a one-out double putting two runners in scoring position.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) was sent into the circle in relief forcing an infield popup before getting out of the jam with a strike out.
She wrapped up the game striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh to register the save and seal the 1-0 win for UW-Whitewater.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) pitched the first five for the win to improve to 3-0 on the season. She fanned four and walked one, allowing just three hits.
The Warhawks used the momentum from game one to take an early lead in game two against Grinnell.
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) singled to left field to open the bottom of the first for UWW. Ward tagged a triple in the right center gap to plate the first run. She came in to score on a Kostroski single to center to make it 2-0 UWW after one complete.
Grinnell responded in the top of the second plating a pair of runs on three hits to tie the game 2-2.
UW-Whitewater reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third.
Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) led off with a single to right and stole second. She advanced to third and scored on a pair of groundouts to give the Warhawks a 3-2 lead. UWW added another run for a cushion on
Meghan Dunning's (Plainfield, Ill./South) RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
Seven Warhawks combined for seven hits in the game. Hock no-hit the Pioneers over the last four innings while striking out eight without issuing a free base.
On the day, Hock tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit ball, striking out 12 without issuing a walk to register a save and a win.
