The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split a pair of games in Clermont Friday morning. UWW dropped the opener to Millikin 7-1 before topping St. Lawrence 2-1 in a nine inning contest.
The Big Blue struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning before adding two in the third, fourth and sixth.
The Warhawks plate their sole run of the contest in the top of the fourth.
Delaney Becker (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tagged a one-out double to left center and was replaced on the bases by Bella Lapacek. With two outs,
Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) singled to center field as Lapacek came around to score.
UWW's four hits in the game were tallied by different Warhawks.
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) suffered the loss in the circle in 2.1 innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the season.
St. Lawrence took the early lead on a four-bagger in the top of the second to go ahead 1-0.
UWW responded in the bottom of the third to tie the game 1-1.
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) led off the frame with a walk and advance to second on Sbarra's single to right. A sacrifice bunt from
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) moved both runners into scoring position and a wild pitch allowed Wickman to score.
An offensive drought took over for both squads until the bottom of the ninth. Playing the international tiebreaker rule with the last batter from the previous inning placed on second base,
Auburn Roberson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) headed out as a pinch runner at second.
Maddie Koenings (West Bend, Wis./West) bunted Roberson to third and
Ally Dietz (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) registered the walkoff single to center to win the game for UWW.
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) came in for the final 2.2 innings of relief striking out two without allowing a hit. In two days of work, Hock has made four appearances in the circle. She's tossed 10 innings, striking out 16 while allowing two hits without allowing an earned run or issuing a walk. In those four outings, Hock has registered a save and a pair of wins.
