Track and Field Teams Second at UW-Stevens Point

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams each finished as runner-up Saturday at UW-Stevens Point's Big Dawg Invitational.
 
In the teams' first away meet of the season, the Warhawk men accumulated 147 points, while the women collected 136.5 points.
 
Colin Lewandowski (Elmhurst, Ill./York) topped a field of 39 competitors in the men's 1-mile run with a 4:23.68. Luke Zanis (St. Charles, Ill./North), Chris Bitz (Brookfield, Wis./East) and Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) were also first-place finishers in their respective events. Zanis took the 400-meter dash in 51.25 seconds, Bitz won the pole vault with a season-best height of 14-10.00 (4.52 meters), and Garrett out-paced the field in the triple jump with his mark of 46-03.25 (14.10 meters).
 
Marlon Cystrunk (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) finished as runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.55 seconds, while Sean Larsen (Waukesha, Wis./South) was second in the weight throw with a distance of 51-02.75 (15.61 meters).
 
UW-W went 1-2-3 in the women's 1-mile run. Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) led the pack with a 5:09.25, a personal record and the No. 7 time in the program record book. She was followed by Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) with a 5:18.75 and Katie Erb (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) with a 5:26.49. The trio later combined with Roxanne Temple (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) to win the 4x400-meter relay in 4:15.55.
 
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) were each winners in field events. Holland tallied a season-best height of 12-05.25 (3.82 meters) in the pole vault, the No. 2 result in NCAA Division III, while Czarnecki posted a career-high 53-07.50 (16.34 meters) to earn top honors in the weight throw and the 25th-best toss in the nation.
 
Runners-up included Jacqueline Kornowski (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) in the 60-meter dash and Lena Becker (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) in the 60-meter hurdles.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts the Midwest Elite Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at Kachel Fieldhouse.
