The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team finished fourth at the 2023 NCAA Upper Midwest Regional hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin. Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) (133) and Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) (184) won the title in their respective weight classes while Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was the runner-up at 149.

Shinhoster, the defending national champion, captured his second consecutive regional title Saturday. The fifth-year senior registered one of the most dominating regional performances in Warhawk history with four straight falls for the title. Shinhoster was in action for just 6:11 in the entire regional. His two matches Friday lasted a total of 1:45. Saturday, Shinhoster opened with a 59 second pin over UW-La Crosse's Kalyn Jahn in the semifinal. His title bout was his longest, yet still ended with the same result, as he pinned Augsburg's Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann, ranked fourth nationally, in 3:26. Shinhoster posted the most wins at the regional and was named the Outstanding Wrestler for his phenomenal performance. With the title, Shinhoster qualifies for the 2023 NCAA Division III National Championship for the third time in his career.

Mallinder continues to impress in his first season competing collegiately. The freshman followed up his WIAC title with a regional championship Saturday. After opening with a major decision and technical fall Friday, Mallinder returned to the mat with a 9-3 decision over Platteville's Zach Thompson, ranked second nationally, Saturday. In the title bout, he topped #10 Tyler Fleetwood of UWEC 3-1. Mallinder's title punches his ticket Roanoke for the national championships.

Burford secured a spot in his third national championship with a runner-up finish at 149 Saturday. He opened day two of the regional like he opened day one, with a fall. His semifinal ended with a pin over UWEC's Zach Sato in 6:54. Burford's title bout was shortened when he had to withdraw due to injury less than two minutes in. The senior has finished among the top seven in four NCAA regionals in his career.

The Warhawks also had a pair of fourth place finishers in the regional including Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) at 141 pounds and Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) at 165 pounds. Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) (125), Ryan Riser (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) (174) and Shelby Jones (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville) (285) battled to seventh place finishes for UWW.

The 2023 NCAA Division III Championships is scheduled for March 10-11 at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The complete field of qualifiers will be announced Monday, February 27 with the brackets to be released March 6.
