Warhawk Women Clinch At Least Share of WIAC Crown

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team clinched at least a share of the 2022-23 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a thrilled 78-75 win over UW-Stout on senior day in Kachel Gymnasium. The title is the 11th in program history and the 4th for the Warhawks in the last 6 seasons (2022, 2020, 2018). UWW now has the second-most regular season league titles in conference history.

Saturday's game was a physical battle throughout. UW-Stout took an early lead as the Warhawks struggled to gain momentum in the first quarter. By the end of the first ten minutes of action, UWW trailed 19-14.

The Warhawks were up for the challenge and whittled away at the lead in the second quarter, outscoring their opponent 21-18 to head into the intermission with a two-point, 37-35, deficit. At the break, UW-Whitewater seniors Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg), Abi Baumgartner (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) were honored at center court before heading to the locker room.

UWW came out of the locker room with more energy in the second half. Midway through, Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) hit a pair of free throws sparking a scoring spurt. Carollo and Sto. Domingo sandwiched a Blue Devil layin with a pair of triples to give the Warhawks a 53-45 lead with 3:24 remaining in the third. Two minutes later, the gap hit double digits as Sto. Domingo knocked down a free throw followed by two more from Carollo. A late jumper in the period sent the teams into the final quarter with a 10-point game, 58-48 in favor of the Warhawks.

The UWW lead was still in double figures at the 2:27 mark, 71-62, when the Blue Devils made a run. Stout scored six in a row before a pair of Carollo free throws stopped the surge to make it 73-66 with just over a minute to go.

The Blue Devils scored quickly and fouled but Sto. Domingo was spot on at the charity stripe to hold the seven-point cushion. Then Stout knocked down a three-pointer with under a minute to go to cut the lead to 75-71. Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) hit one of two from the charity stripe but a pair on Stout's end narrowed the gap to three, 76-73 win 27 seconds to go.

Carollo split a pair from the stripe and a missed layup was hauled in by Belschner who was immediately fouled with 10 seconds to go. She made the second of the pair to make it a five-point game.

Stout went the distance for the final bucket as the Warhawks were careful not to foul for the final.

For the eighth time in head coach Keri Carollo's tenure at the helm, the Warhawks honored the tradition of cutting down the nets with another WIAC crown.
