Warhawk Women Drop WIAC Finale, Hold Top Seed Heading into League Tournament

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team fell to UW-Platteville on the road Wednesday evening in the regular season finale. The Warhawks, who clinched a share of the program's 11th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title Saturday, hold the number one seed heading into the league tournament.

As the top seed in the six-team conference tournament, UWW earned a first round bye and will host the lowest remaining seed Thursday, February 23 at 7 p.m. First round games feature #6 UW-Platteville at #3 UW-Eau Claire and #5 UW-La Crosse at #4 UW-Oshkosh. UW-Stout earned the number two seed and a share of the league title after defeating UWEC in the regular season finale. The championship will be hosted by the highest remaining seed Saturday, February 25 at either 3 or 7 p.m. The winner of the WIAC tournament will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.

There was a proverbial lid on the basket for both teams through the first three quarters. By the end of the third, neither squad was shooting above 30-percent from the floor as the Pioneers held a 34-33 advantage heading into the final quarter of action.

The lid came off for the final 10 minutes of play. UWW shot 41-percent from the field in the final quarter, but UW-Platteville really got hot hitting 69-percent. The difference came on the glass – despite just a four-rebound margin between the two teams, the Pioneers outscored the Warhawks 17-6 in second chance points.

Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) led the Warhawks with 21 points. Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) hauled in a game high 15 boards.
