The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team overcame a shaky start to defeat UW-Stout 94-88 in overtime on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Warhawks shot just 31-percent from the floor while the Blue Devils dropped in buckets at a 56-percent clip to open up a 42-30 lead at halftime.
On the other side of the break, UWW had nearly equaled their first half point total in the first ten minutes of play. Right around the halfway mark,
Miles Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Howards Grove) knocked down a pair of free throws followed by a
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) layup to give the Warhawks a 61-59 lead with 9:32 on the clock.
From that point, there were seven ties but just two lead changes the rest of the way through regulation. As the time ticked away, it looked like the Warhawks may secure the comeback without needing extra time as Barnstable hit a three to make it 77-74 with 26 seconds remaining.
A Stout layup with 15 seconds to go cut the lead to one but Chislom once again gave the Warhawks a three point cushion with a pair of free throws. The Blue Devils knocked down a triple after the inbound to knot the game 79-79 with six seconds on the clock and the Warhawks final heave was no good to send the game into overtime.
The Blue Devils registered the first bucket of the extra period on a layup, but an old-fashioned three-point play from Chislom reclaimed the UWW lead, 82-81, with 4:05 on the clock and the Warhawks held the advantage the rest of the way.
With just one game remaining in league play, final seeds for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will likely be determined by the finale on Wednesday. UW-Oshkosh has already secured the regular season title and number one seed heading into the six-team tournament.
