The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team made a home stand against the #12 University of Chicago team. Coming into the game, both teams had undefeated records, sitting at 7-0. The Warhawks took care of business and remained undefeated and handed UChicago their first loss of the season.
For the first few minutes, both teams traded baskets, in what was shaped up to be a stellar game between two Top-25 teams. But UW-Whitewater put together a huge 15-2 run, giving them a 20-9 lead with only two minutes left in the first quarter. UW-Whitewater made 11 of their 20 shots in the first quarter (55%). In the last few minutes of the quarter, the Maroons were able to bring down the lead, but the Warhawks remained on top after the first, 24-16.
The second quarter was a similar story, with the Warhawk defense not allowing a basket for nearly four minutes. During that time, the Warhawk offense grew the lead, going up by 17 points. UChicago started to get their footing back on offense, but the Warhawks had control of the game heading into half time, up 44-28.Â
Coming out of the break, the Maroons started to chip away at the lead with their three-point shooting. UChicago connected on three of their six deep balls of the third quarter, and brought the Warhawk lead down to only 10 at the end of the third quarter.
Up by 10 with just 10 minutes remaining, the Warhawks had their work cut out. The Maroons tried to use three-point shooting to comeback, but the closest they got was seven points. UW-Whitewater hit their free throws down the stretch, making all three attempts in the fourth quarter to close out the game.
