Warhawks Take Down Blugolds in Top 25 Matchup

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team, ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, took down ninth-ranked UW-Eau Claire 79-69 on the Blugolds home court Saturday evening.

A huge third quarter for the Warhawks bolstered the win. UWW led by four, 19-15 after the first quarter and held the four-point advantage heading into the intermission.

On the other side of halftime, UW-Whitewater went on a 9-2 run in just over three minutes of action to extend the margin into double figures, 45-34. Following a single Blugold free throw, Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) knocked down a bucket from long range off an assist from Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) to spark a 7-2 spurt. That run culminated in a Carollo layup that made it 52-37 UWW with 3:25 to go in the third.

The teams traded baskets with Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) registering the steal and layup as time expired to send the Warhawks into the final quarter enjoying a 15-point, 58-43, lead.

UW-Eau Claire battled in the fourth cutting the gap to seven with less than a minute to go but Carollo was perfect from the charity stripe to seal the game. She hit a pair with 36 seconds to go and then two more with 26 remaining that pushed the cushion back into double figures.

The Warhawks were efficient in the second half shooting over 60-percent in both the third and fourth quarters.

Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) led UWW with a season-high 27 points adding seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Carollo posted another double-double, her fifth of the season, with 19 points and 10 boards. Trautsch never left the floor dropping in 14 points in 40 minutes of action. Sto. Domingo wrapped up the double digit scorers with 12 on 5-7 from the floor including 2-3 from downtown. She added five assists and six rebounds in the game.
