Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warhawk Men Upend Eagles on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team registered the same total as their first time playing UW-La Crosse this season but captured a different, better result in round two. UW-Whitewater took the #20 Eagles down to the wire as Miles Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Howards Grove) sealed the 74-71 win at the free throw line in the final seconds.

After falling to UWL 88-74 back in November in Kachel Gym, the Warhawks returned the favor defeating the Eagles on their home court Wednesday. As the close final score would suggest, it was a back-and-forth affair in Mitchell Hall with five ties and five lead changes in the first half alone.

The Warhawks put together a 12-0 run midhalf bolstered by five points each from Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and Barnstable. The spurt held the Eagles scoreless for nearly four minutes as UWW accumulated a 21-12 lead by the 9:47 mark. UW-La Crosse responded with a 12-3 run over the next five minutes to knot the game 24-24. UW-Whitewater would retake the lead and hold just a two-point advantage at the break.

The second half featured even more lead changes, six, with five ties the rest of the way. The game ended up coming down to the wire and was won at the free throw line. The Warhawks led by six, 71-65, with 2:16 on the clock but a drought head UWW scoreless for nearly the next two minutes.

UWL pulled to within two before Barnstable hit a free throw on a one-shot technical foul to push the lead back to three, 72-69 with 21 seconds remaining. The Warhawks missed a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left and an Eagle jumper on the ensuing possession cut the margin to one, 72-71 with just eight seconds on the clock.

Barnstable was fouled on the inbound and nailed both from the charity stripe sealing the 74-71 win.

Barnstable ended up with 25 points bolstered by a perfect 12-12 night at the free throw line. Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) dropped in 18 points on 8-11 from the floor. Barker posted 14 adding three steals while Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) wrapped up the double digit scorers for UWW with 11. Drew Fisher (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) led the Warhawks on the glass with seven rebounds.
