Warhawk Women Pick Up Big Win on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team picked up a big win on the road Saturday afternoon topping UW-River Falls 65-54.

The Warhawks got it done in the paint Saturday outscoring the home squad 30-16. UWW was efficient offensively from the opening tip hitting 54-percent from the floor in the first quarter. The defense held the Falcons to under 22-percent in that span. After the first 10 minutes of action, UW-Whitewater held a seven-point lead, 15-8.

UW-River Falls won the second quarter cutting the margin down to five by the intermission, 32-27, courtesy of a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) bolstered the Warhawks' offensively in the first half with 15 points including nine in the second quarter alone.

In the third quarter, the Falcons worked their way back into the lead just over three minutes in after a triple made it 39-37 UWRF. Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) had the response for UWW knotting the game at 39 and Grundahl hit a layup less than a minute later to reclaim the lead for the Warhawks with 5:15 on the clock. UW-Whitewater held the lead the rest of the way.

Grundahl was on fire hitting 11-13 from the floor and 1-2 from long range for a game-high 24 points. She added six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) posted 18 points, nine boards, five steals and two blocks in the contest. Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) wrapped up the double figure scorers for UWW with 10.
