The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team won the middle quarters but couldn't come back from a first quarter deficit in a 65-49 loss to UW-Platteville Wednesday night in Kachel Gymnasium.
There was a virtual lid on the basket for the Warhawks Wednesday while the Pioneers literally could not miss in the paint in the first quarter. UWW was just 4-19 from the floor in the first 10 minutes. UW-Platteville was 11-16 in the first quarter including a perfect 11-11 in the paint en route to taking a 24-9 lead.
UW-Whitewater won the second and third quarters, outscoring the Pioneers 14-12 and 13-11 respectively. In the final quarter, UWW shot nearly 40-percent, their best offensive output of the night while the defense held the Pioneers to just 17-percent from the floor. However, UW-Platteville hit 9-10 from the charity stripe in the final quarter to keep UWW from working their way back into the game.
UWP outscored the Warhawks 44-28 in points in the paint in the game.
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) led UWW with 20 points adding three assists.
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) dropped in 11 points and posted a team-high six rebounds.
Through the first round of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, the Warhawks are 4-3 and tied for third in the league. UWW opens the second round through the league at UW-River Falls Saturday before hosting UW-La Crosse Wednesday night.
