Brawlers Take Third at Al Hanke Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team finished third in an 18-team field at the Al Hanke Invitational hosted by Elmhurst University Saturday. The Warhawks were led by a runner-up finish from Tyler Klein (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) and five additional third place finishes as 19 UWW wrestlers took to the mat. 

The 125-pound weight class boasted the largest contingent of Warhawk wrestlers as four represented UWW in the bracket. Klein went 4-1 to finish as the runner-up while Jonah Edwards was third, John Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) fourth and Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) took the consolation title. Klein's battle for the title was a close one as he fell by 2-1 decision to Millikin's Tommy Russell. 

At 133 pounds, Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) went 5-1 to finish third. Mallinder opened the day with a pin of Emilio Acosta (Concordia) in 4:19 followed by a 16-0 technical fall over Mario Ramirez of Harper College. He advanced to a semifinal with a fall in 4:38 over Millikin's DJ Millett. Mallinder defeated teammate Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) by 3-2 decision in the third-place bout. 

Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) added third-place points to the team total at 141 pounds. He won three straight before falling to UW-La Crosse's Sam Lorenz in a semifinal. In the battle for third, he defeated Chicago's Vincent Menozzi by 8-3 decision. 

The 141-pound weight class saw another Warhawk on the podium with bronze. Lucio Morgan (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) tallied a technical fall and pin before falling in a semifinal to eighth-ranked Tyler Goebel of UWL by 3-1 decision. His battle for third was a thriller as he defeated Concordia MN's Jacob Prunty 7-5 in sudden victory. 

Tyler Haydon (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) had a tough draw at 174 pounds. Receiving a first round bye, Haydon's first bout was against third-ranked Seth Brossard of UWL where he dropped into the consolation bracket. There he ran off three straight wins to finish as the consolation runner-up. with a 3-2 record on the day. 

At 197 pounds, Evan Danowski (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) picked up a pin in 3:59 over Laurore Supris of Concordia MN and a 10-1 major decision over Elmhurst's Colin O'Neill before falling to fourth-ranked Ben Kawczynski in a semifinal rematch from earlier this week. Danowski finished third following a medical forfeit in the third-place bout. 

Shelby Jones (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville) went 3-1 Saturday wrapping up his day with a fall in 3:48 over Karson Richardson of UW-Stevens Point for bronze.
