Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comeback Falls Short for Warhawk Women

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team was unable to comeback from a first quarter deficit in a 72-65 loss at UW-Stout Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils came out firing shooting 53-percent in the first quarter while the Warhawks struggled to get going offensively. Shooting just over 27-percent from the floor, UWW trailed 21-10 after 10 minutes of action.

The Warhawks got more efficient as the game went on starting their comeback attempt in the second. UWW shot 36-percent and held Stout to 33-percent outscoring the home team 14-10 to pull within six, 30-24 at the break. Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) led the charge scoring five in the quarter adding four rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist.

Trailing 40-32 in the third, Belschner hit a bucket at the 3:37 to spark a Warhawk run. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) dropped in a pair from the charity stripe followed by a huge triple from Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) to cut the gap to one, 40-39, by the 2:22 mark. The teams traded baskets but headed into the fourth with a one-point game after a Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) three-pointer made it 45-44 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Carollo drew a foul early in the fourth and made both from the free throw line to give the Warhawks the lead. Stout responded with a small run before Lunden Alexander (Dolton, Ill./Thornwood) hit one from beyond the arc to once again pull UWW to within one, 56-55 halfway through the quarter. Alexander swiped the ball on the press and found Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) for the layin a minute later to once again give UW-Whitewater the one-point advantage. The Blue Devils responded with a 9-0 spurt to take a 65-57 lead with 1:19 to go.

The Warhawks were able to cut the deficit to five but could not complete the comeback as UW-Stout sealed the game from the free throw line.

Belschner led UWW with 17 points on 7-10 from the floor and 3-4 performance from the free throw line. She added seven rebounds, four blocks and a pair of assists. Grundahl posted 12 points on 4-5 from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.
