The No. 5 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team finished 0-2 Thursday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culver's) at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
The Warhawks (33-8 overall) will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday at 11 a.m. Central Time during the NCAA Selection Show, which airs on
NCAA.com. UW-W was No. 1 in the latest NCAA Region IX Rankings.
UW-Whitewater was topped 17-4 in seven innings against UW-Oshkosh before falling 14-12 against UW-La Crosse in its second game of the day.
In Game 2, the Warhawks took a 7-1 advantage with a seven-run third inning. The Eagles (24-17) pulled to within 7-6 in the top of the sixth before UW-W responded with three in the bottom half of the frame.
UWL drew to within one again with three runs in the seventh, but UW-Whitewater tallied two more in the eighth to pad its lead to 12-9. The Eagles plated five runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead for good.
Left fielder
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) tallied three hits, including a three-run homer, and finished with five runs batted in for the contest. Right fielder
Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) posted three hits, one walk, two runs scored and two RBIs, while catcher
Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) finished with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI.
First baseman
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) recorded two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs, centerfielder
Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) collected two hits, one walk, two runs scored and one RBI, and second baseman
David Rubin (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) totaled two hits and two runs scored.
Kade Lancour (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa),
Joey Pettit (West Bend, Wis./Marquette University HS) and
Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional) appeared on the mound in the game for UW-W. Rector took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year.
In the first game of the day, UW-Oshkosh (23-17) scored 11 runs in the first two innings and 16 in the first four frames.
Campbell socked a two-run homer on his way to a 2-for-4, three RBI showing. Rubin finished 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI and Scolan registered two hits.
Wastin Muir took the loss to drop to 9-2 on the season.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) and
Trey Bretl (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) each appeared in relief.
The WIAC Tournament continues at Miller Stadium Friday at 10 a.m.
