The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team finished 1-1 in a doubleheader Monday against UW-Oshkosh at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
The Warhawks (12-5 overall, 4-2 WIAC) topped the Titans 8-6 in the opener before falling 9-0 in Game 2.
In the opener, UW-Whitewater erased a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) improved to 4-0 with the win, striking out five over 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Cam Anfang (Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson) started and pitched the first three frames, striking out six, before being relieved by
Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional), who struck out three over 3 2/3 innings.
All nine hitters in the Warhawk lineup tallied at least one hit in the contest. Second baseman
Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) finished 3-for-4 with one run scored and two runs batted in. Shortstop
Austin Wessel (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) plated two runs and scored another.
UW-Oshkosh (7-9, 2-4) touched home plate three times in the first inning and once in the third for a 4-0 advantage.
Wessel got UW-W started in the bottom of the fifth with a bases-loaded, two-run single to right. Frazer plated another run with a base hit to left before Wessel scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Right fielder
Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) knocked an RBI double to right center to give the Warhawks the lead.
UW-Whitewater added one run in the sixth on a base hit to left center by Frazer.
The Titans tied the game at 6-6 with two in the top of the seventh inning. First baseman
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) gave the Warhawks the lead for good with a run-scoring triple to right center with nobody out in the eighth. Centerfielder
Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) doubled the advantage with a two-out base hit up the middle to plate Paget.
Berendt pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame to preserve the victory.
In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater totaled seven hits but left six runners on base in the contest, including three in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) dropped to 1-1 with the loss, pitching the first 3 2/3 frames.
