The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team resumed non-conference play Saturday with a doubleheader split at Chicago.
The Warhawks (14-14 overall) dropped the first game by a 5-3 score before rebounding in Game 2 with a 6-3 triumph.
In the second game,
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) reached base four times with two walks and two hits, including a two-run homer in the top of the first that gave UW-W the lead for good. The shortstop also scored three runs in the contest.
First baseman
Ally Dietz (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) tallied three hits and plated three runs, including two on a base hit through the right side in the third inning and one on a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Centerfielder
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) reached base twice with one hit and one walk and scored two runs.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) started the game on the mound and earned her fourth win of the year, striking out three batters over four innings.
Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) tossed three scoreless frames in relief for her first save of the year.
In the opener, UW-Whitewater left runners on base in each of the last five innings, including the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh.
The Warhawks trailed 3-0 heading to the third inning, when right fielder
Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) and left fielder
Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) recorded RBI groundouts to pull the team within one.
In the fourth, third baseman
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3.
The Maroons (15-12) tallied one run apiece in the fifth and sixth frames.
Designated player
Sydney Anderson (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) registered two hits to lead the offense. Sbarra, Wickman and first baseman
Kendall Pliner (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) each reached base twice with one hit and one walk.
Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) took the loss, dropping to 5-3 for the season. She pitched the first 4 1/3 innings before handing off to Hollatz, who finished the remaining 1 2/3 frames.
UW-Whitewater visits North Central Monday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. in Naperville, Ill.
