The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team played its final non-conference away games of the regular season Monday, splitting a doubleheader at North Central (Ill.).
The Warhawks (15-15 overall) were defeated 5-0 in the first game before flipping the script in Game 2 with a 2-0 victory.
In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater plated two runs in the top of the third for all the run support needed by
Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), who tossed a complete-game shutout.
Hollatz (6-7) surrendered three hits and three walks with two strikeouts during the performance, stranding runners in scoring position in each of the final two frames to preserve the win.
Second baseman
Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) led the offense with three hits and put UW-W ahead for good with a run-scoring, infield single to start the third. First baseman
Ally Dietz (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) singled to left with two outs to double the Warhawk advantage.
Right fielder
Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) posted two hits and one run scored. Centerfielder
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) recorded one hit and third baseman
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) scored one run.
In Game 1, the Cardinals broke open a two-run game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Shortstop
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) recorded two hits, while Dietz finished with one hit. Wickman and
Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) each drew one walk.
Cleveland dropped to 5-4 with the loss, surrendering two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.
Annie Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) recorded the final two outs in the sixth in relief.
