No. 11 Baseball Earns Back-to-Back Road Wins

The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team started a four-game Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series at UW-La Crosse Friday with a pair of victories at Copeland Park in La Crosse.

The Warhawks (17-6 overall, 9-3 WIAC) took the first game by a 9-5 score before earning a 7-3 win in the nightcap.

In Game 2, UW-Whitewater took the lead for good with a four-run top of the third inning and added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

Pitcher Kade Lancour (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) struck out 10 batters over seven innings to improve to 5-0 on the year. Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional) tossed the final two innings in relief, inducing a game-ending, 4-3 double play with the tying run in the on-deck circle in the bottom of the ninth.

After the Eagles (12-11, 7-7) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the Warhawks tallied all four runs in the top of the third after there were two outs. Right fielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) started the scoring with a run-scoring triple to right center and was followed by centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington), who smashed a three-run homer to right for a 4-2 UW-W lead.

Second baseman Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) knocked an RBI single to left with two outs in the fourth to increase the advantage. In the fifth, DeMeyer led off the inning with a solo homer and catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) added a sacrifice fly for the second run of the frame.

Vomhof led the offense with three hits, one run scored and one RBI. DeMeyer finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Campbell collected one hit, two walks, two runs scored and three RBIs. Designated hitter Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) added two hits.

In the opener, UW-Whitewater's six-run fourth inning, when it connected for three home runs, proved to be the difference in the contest as the two teams combined for 23 hits.

Campbell socked a three-run homer as part of the fourth to lead the offense. Shortstop Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) and left fielder Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) each hit solo homers in the fourth. Frazer finished with two RBIs in the game, while Scolan finished 3-for-4 with one walk, three runs scored and one RBI.

DeMeyer and Norton also plated runs in the contest, while Korman registered two hits and one run scored. Vomhof contributed two hits, one walk and one run scored and first baseman Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) posted two hits and one run scored.

Pitcher Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)) improved to 5-1 on the season after striking out seven batters over 7 1/3 innings. Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) finished out the contest, recording three strikeouts in 1 2/3 frames.

The Warhawks conclude their series at UW-La Crosse Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
