No. 10 Baseball Splits on Day 2 at UW-Eau Claire

The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team claimed a series win at UW-Eau Claire Monday by splitting a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bollinger Fields.
 
The Warhawks (15-6 overall, 7-3 WIAC) took the opener by an 11-3 score before being edged 12-11 in Game 2.
 
In Game 1, UW-Whitewater broke a scoreless tie with a six-run top of the fifth. Designated hitter Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) plated the first two runs before second baseman Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) made it 3-0 with a run-scoring single to right field. Third baseman Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) blasted a two-run homer to right and shortstop Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) drew a bases-loaded walk to give UW-W a six-run lead.
 
The Blugolds (7-13, 2-8) answered with three in the bottom half of the frame, but the Warhawks finished out the game with five unanswered runs. First baseman Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) scored on a passed ball in the sixth and Frazer and Vomhof each knocked in runs in the seventh. Darryl Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) scored from third on a balk in the eighth and Dylan Rost (Granger, Ind./Elkhart) walked with the bases loaded to account for the final margin in the ninth.
 
Vomhof finished 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs, while Korman reached base three times with two hits and one walk. Frazer reached four times with two hits and two walks and centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) tallied two hits and one run scored.
 
Cam Anfang (Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson) struck out a career-high 13 batters over seven innings to earn his first win of the year. Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional) struck out four over two scoreless innings of relief.
 
In the second game, UW-Eau Claire scored nine unanswered runs, including three in the bottom of the ninth inning.
 
Second baseman Joey Pettit (West Bend, Wis./Marquette University HS) finished 3-for-4 with one home run, one walk, two runs scored and three RBIs. Left fielder Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) registered four hits, one walk, three runs scored and one RBI, while Paden collected one hit, one run scored and two RBIs.
 
Frazer knocked in three runs and scored one run, Campbell posted one hit and two runs scored and catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) recorded two hits, one walk and one run scored.
 
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) struck out 12 batters over six innings of work. Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton), Eli Frank (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) and Vomhof each pitched relief stints. Vomhof (0-1) took the loss.
 
UW-Whitewater visits UW-La Crosse for a four-game series starting with Friday's doubleheader at 1 p.m.
