Softball Sweeps Day 5 at NTC Spring Games

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team earned two wins Wednesday at the NTC Spring Games at the National Training Center complex in Clermont, Fla.

The Warhawks (5-5 overall) bested Middlebury (Vt.) 11-3 in six innings before topping Buffalo State 7-4 in their second and final game of the day.

Against Middlebury (4-2), UW-Whitewater plated runs in five of the six frames to end the contest by run rule.

Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) pitched all six innings to improve to 3-2 on the year. She scattered six hits over six innings and tallied two strikeouts, nine flyball outs and five groundouts in the performance.

Left fielder Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Second baseman Delaney Becker (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) posted two hits and one run scored, and shortstop Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) and designated player Sydney Anderson (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) knocked in two runs apiece.

UW-W plated four runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Anderson, an RBI sacrifice bunt by first baseman Brooke Mangler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and a ground ball by Kinjerski.

Right fielder Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) increased the lead to five in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring triple to right center.

After a three-run homer by the Panthers in the top of the third, UW-Whitewater answered with two more runs thanks to an infield hit by Sbarra.

Sbarra knocked in another run with a two-out base hit in the fifth to make it 8-3. The Warhawks ended the game in the sixth on an RBI groundout by catcher Kennedy Cox (Janesville, Wis./Craig), a sacrifice fly by Kinjerski and a base hit up the middle by pinch hitter Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon) with two outs.

In the game against Buffalo State (2-6), UW-Whitewater broke open a 2-2 game with five runs in the top of the seventh. The Bengals brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) finished off her first win of the season by inducing a pop-up and a groundout.

Cleveland started the game on the mound and allowed one earned run over four innings. Kathryn Kinsella (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) pitched 2/3 of an inning before Dick took over and tossed the final 2 1/3 frames.

UW-Whitewater took the lead in the top of the second on Kinjerski's two-out, RBI single to center.

After Buffalo State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, Sbarra gave the Warhawks the lead back in the top of the fifth on a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle.

The Bengals tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth to set the stage for UW-W's big seventh inning, which included six hits and one Buffalo State error. Kostroski gave UW-Whitewater the lead with an RBI double before second baseman Delaney Becker (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) doubled the lead with a run-scoring single.

Pinch hitter Kendall Pliner (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) added another run with a base hit up the middle and the Warhawks scored two more on an error.
