The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team reached the halfway point of its annual spring break trip Sunday after splitting two games at the National Training Center complex in Clermont, Fla.
The Warhawks (3-3 overall) were defeated 8-0 in five innings against Benedictine (Ill.) before topping Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) by an 8-0 score in six innings to close the day.
Against Washington & Jefferson (3-1), UW-Whitewater scored six runs in the top of the second inning and didn't look back.
Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and
Kathryn Kinsella (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) combined for a two-hit shutout. Hollatz (2-1) struck out five batters over five innings, and
Kathryn Kinsella (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning to finish off the run-rule shortened contest.
Krista Sbarra (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted in. First baseman
Kendall Pliner (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) and left fielder
Grace Butler (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) each tallied one hit, one run scored and one RBI, and third baseman
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) and right fielder
Maggie Reinert (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) posted one RBI apiece.
Pliner and Butler started the second with run-scoring singles. After an RBI groundout by Wickman, Sbarra knocked a two-run double to left and later scored on an error.
Sbarra added another run-scoring double in the sixth, and Reinert followed later in the inning with a two-out, RBI single to right center.
In the game against Benedictine (4-1), the Warhawks fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first and were unable to build any momentum at the plate. The Eagles added three more in the fourth and two more in the fifth before holding UW-W scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via run rule.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) dropped her first decision of the year, pitching 3 2/3 innings before giving way to
Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon), who tossed the final 1 1/3 frames.

Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) each supplied one hit for UW-Whitewater.
The Warhawks will have an off day before taking on Hope (Mich.) and Augustana (Ill.) this Tuesday at 8 a.m. Central Time and 10:15 a.m. Central Time, respectively.
