Men’s Basketball This Week Presented by Fairfield Inn & Suites Whitewater (Feb. 7-13)

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team plays its final two road games of the regular season this week as it positions itself for the upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
 
The Warhawks (12-9 overall, 5-5 WIAC) visit No. 2 UW-Platteville Wednesday at 7 p.m. before making a trip to UW-Stout on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tipoff. Both games can be heard live on KIX 106.5 FM WKCH in Whitewater or online at kix1065.com.

On Saturday, the Warhawks were edged 69-67 in overtime against UW-River Falls. Derek Gray (Madison, Wis./La Follette) posted 16 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and Gage Malensek (Brookfield, Wis./Central) each finished with 13 points. Prior to tipoff, the team recognized seniors Jack Brahm (Bayside, Wis./Glendale Nicolet), Brian Conaghan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Paul Kingsley (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita of Cascia) as part of Senior Day presented by Educators Credit Union. Brahm totaled 11 points and seven rebounds in the contest.
 
Three days earlier, UW-Whitewater stormed back from 15 points down just past the midway point of the second half to close within six points at the 4:15 mark but was outlasted 80-68 at No. 8 UW-La Crosse. Gray collected a game-high 24 points, including 19 in the second half, and Capstran and Elijah Lambert (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) tallied 10 points apiece.
 
Wednesday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m. – at UW-Platteville (Radio: KIX 106.5 FM WKCH)
 
UW-Platteville (19-2, 8-2) recovered from its second loss of the year earlier in the week to defeat UW-Stevens Point 72-58 in a road game on Saturday. The Pioneers shot 50.9 percent from the floor and held the Pointers to 38.2 percent, jumping out to a 15-point halftime lead and sustaining it throughout the second half.
 
Quentin Shields leads UWP in scoring with 15.8 points per game and is an 86.7 percent shooter at the free-throw line. Kyle Tuma (14.3 points per game) and Logan Pearson (12.1 ppg) also average double figures in scoring. The Pioneers hold opponents to an average of 63.1 points per game, good for the second-lowest figure in the league.
 
The Jan. 12 meeting between the two teams was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. The two teams most recently played on Feb. 19, 2021, when the Warhawks took the lead with 2:09 remaining before the Pioneers scored the last seven points in a 64-58 loss in Platteville. Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks to lead UW-W, which limited UW-Platteville to 36.8 percent shooting in the game.
 
The Pioneers lead the all-time series between the two teams 112-107. The Warhawks are 29-17 against UW-Platteville under head coach Pat Miller.
 
Saturday, Feb. 12, 3 p.m. – at UW-Stout (Radio: KIX 106.5 FM WKCH)
 
UW-Stout (14-7, 5-5) had won four of its last five games prior to an 84-57 loss at nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. The Titans knocked down 12 three-pointers and shot 58.1 percent in the first half to surge to a double-digit lead. UWS was limited to 41.9 percent shooting from the floor.
 
Five players average double figures in scoring for the Blue Devils, who boast the league's top scoring offense, averaging 88.0 points per game. Lovell Williams paces the group with 18.8 points per affair with a league-best 110 assists, and is followed by Armani Tinsley (15.5 points per game), Jon Ciriacks (11.8 ppg), Brody Fox (11.0 ppg) and Luke Geiger (10.0 ppg). Drew Scott (8.0 ppg) shoots a conference-leading 70.6 percent from the field entering the week.
 
The Warhawks shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and hit 24-of-31 from the free-throw line while forcing 20 turnovers on the defensive end in a 92-76 win against UW-Stout back on Dec. 4 at Kachel Gymnasium. Gray recorded 30 points with eight rebounds and three steals, Brahm generated 18 points and six rebounds and Malensek added 16 points, five assists and three steals.
 
UW-Whitewater holds an 85-46 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams.
 
The Blue Devils visit UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday before hosting the Warhawks on Saturday.
