The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team honored teammate
Derek Gray (Madison, Wis./La Follette) during the team's 78-61 win over Lake Forest College Tuesday night. Gray, an integral part of the Warhawk team last season, tragically passed away over the summer.
In front of a packed crowd in Kachel Gymnasium, UW-Whitewater administrators and coaches presented Traci Pine, Gray's mother, with a diploma and plaque recognizing his numerous accomplishments including All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors and preseason All-America recognition among others. A tribute video was played as the Warhawks, fans and Gray's family watched on at halftime.
After heading into the break with a seven-point, 36-29 advantage, UWW pushed the pace in the second half. The Warhawks capitalized on miscues while
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) took over. The guard was 5-7 from the floor, 1-1 from beyond the arc and a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line for 13 second half points.
Will Pytleski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) also provided a spark for the offense connecting on his first try from the floor while dishing out four assists in his 12 minutes of action in the second half.
UW-Whitewater built upon their lead taking as much as a 20-point advantage with less than seven minutes to go in the contest. Much of that was credit to their offensive efficiency as the Warhawks scored on nearly half of their possessions in the game. UWW shot 53-percent from the floor (32-60) while holding the Foresters to 43-percent (25-58). The Warhawks' hustle on defense paid off as UWW enjoyed a 22-3 advantage in points off turnovers in the contest.
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) was a single rebound shy of a double-double adding a game-high 19 points. He also posted a pair of assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Miles Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Howards Grove) registered 15 points and six boards. The Warhawks' leading passer,
Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's), added seven assists to his season total to go along with a 14-point performance.
Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) wrapped up the double figure scorers with 10 points in the contest.
