The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team won the turnover battle to lead the Warhawks to a 66-60 win over St. Scholastica in the team's first game of the Holiday Classic hosted by UW-River Falls Thursday afternoon.
UW-Whitewater had an efficient opening half hitting nearly 50-percent of their shots from the floor and 7-9 from the charity stripe to open up a 39-29 lead at the break. The Warhawk defense kept the Saints off the line allowing just two free throws in the first 20 minutes of action, both missed.
The Warhawks struggled on the other side of the intermission offensively. St. Scholastica quickly wiped out the ten-point advantage, tying it up 41-41 less than five minutes in. The Saints took over eventually building a five-point lead by the 8:19 mark, 55-50.
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) knocked down a jumper in the paint with just under eight minutes to go to spark a 16-5 run to close out the game. Chislom tallied nine points in the final eight minutes of play to lead the Warhawks to the victory.
Although UWW struggled offensively in the second half shooting just 36-percent, the Warhawks capitalized on points off turnovers with an 18-6 advantage in points scored off miscues. The free throw line was also pivotal in the win as UW-Whitewater hit 14-21 compared to just 1-3 for St. Scholastica.
Chislom led all players with 19 points sharing team-high honors with six rebounds.
Delvin Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) dropped in 12 while
Miles Barnstable (Sheboygan, Wis./Howards Grove) registered 11 and the pair posted six boards each in the contest. The Warhawks swiped 13 steals in the game with seven players registering at least one.
