The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team took a limited squad to compete in the Pointer Open Saturday. The tournament featured NCAA Division II and III competition, as well as unattached wrestlers from the University of Wisconsin and University of Minnesota.
John Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and
Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) represented UWW at 125 pounds. Fortugno dropped his first match to North Central's Julian Valtierrez by technical fall 20-4. Dunson fell by tech fall to an unattached Badger wrestler 19-3 in the first match of the bracket.
Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) was topped by North Central's Robbie Precin in a close bout 4-2 at 133 pounds.
At 141 pounds, Darakai Clay opened his day with a pin in 5:00 over Luther's Tristan Day. He followed with a hefty 22-7 technical fall victory over Michael Rodriguez of Augustana College. He took Pierre Baldwin of Central into a second tie break before falling 10-5 in his third bout of the day.
Lucio Morgan (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) went 2-1 at 149 pounds for the Warhawks. He opened with a 10-5 decision over Duncan Delzell of Central. His second bout was a 7-2 decision over UW-Oshkosh's Luke Mocyznski. In his third match of the day, Morgan fell to Luther's Chase Kmosena by decision, 8-3.
Alex Valenzona (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College Prep) also represented UWW at 149 pounds. After receiving a first round bye, Valenzona fell to Division II Wisconsin-Parkside's Torry Early by tech fall, 18-0.
Buddy Evangelista (Wheaton, Ill./North) dropped his opener at 165 pounds by an 8-2 decision to UW-Stevens Point's Brandon Peckham.
At 174 pounds,
Evan Danowski (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) advanced in the bracket with back-to-back wins. After pinning Augustana's Brian Salinas in 3:01, Danowski topped Josh Heuss of UW-Stevens Point 6-2. He fell in a close 5-4 decision to an unattached wrestler from the University of Wisconsin, Brody Hemauer.
Kade Desormeau received an opening round bye and defeated Augustana's Clay DeBaillie by decision 9-6. He fell to UWSP's Trystan Altensey by major decision 10-2 in his second bout of the day.
Two Warhawks represented UWW at 285 pounds.
Jordan Lewis (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) was topped by Miles Berg of Central 3-2.
Shelby Jones (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville) had a bye through the first round before falling in sudden victory 3-1 to an unattached wrestler from the University of Minnesota, Max Villnow.
The 157 and 197 pound weight classes did not feature any Warhawk wrestlers.
UW-Whitewater will head to Kenosha Thursday for a dual against Wisconsin-Parkside before sending a squad to compete at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa next Saturday.
