The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fell to UW-La Crosse, ranked fourth nationally, 88-74 in the team's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener in Whitewater Wednesday night.
The Warhawks were more efficient offensively in the first half hitting 48% of their shots from the floor compared to 44% for UWL. The difference came from long range. The Eagles were 8-19 from three-point range while UWW was 2-3. UW-Whitewater made up some of the ground hitting 6-8 from the free throw line while the Eagles were 0-2. La Crosse held a 38-30 at the break.
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) hit 5-7 from the floor and was 1-1 from deep to lead all scorers with 11 first half points.
Chislom's hot hand continued into the second half. He knocked a pair of triples to bolster a 10-4 run on the other side of the break to cut the deficit to two, 42-40, with 17:39 on the clock. From that point, Eagle offense heated up and couldn't miss over the next five minutes putting together a 16-5 run to open a 58-45 lead. UWL held the advantage the rest of the way.
The Warhawks shot well in the second half hitting 63% of their shots from the floor (15-24) and three-point range (5-8). UWL shot 62% (18-29) from the field and 67% from long range (4-6) in the second half.
For the game, UW-Whitewater was more efficient but a 32-23 sway in rebounds led to a 19-6 advantage for the Eagles in second chance points. UWL also capitalized on miscues holding a 19-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Chislom posted a game-high 24 points on 9-13 from the floor, 3-4 from beyond the arc and 3-4 from the free throw line. He added three assists in the game.
Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) added 13 points on 5-8 shooting with three assists and three steals. Miles Barnstable rounded out the double digit scorers with ten.
