The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship after defeating the University of California-Santa Cruz 1-0 Thursday. The C2C Championship is hosted by Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland.
UC-Santa Cruz poured on the offense in the first half outshooting the Warhawks 10-1 but the UWW defense and
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) held the Banana Slugs off the board.
In the 60th minute, the Warhawks drew a penalty in the box. A long throw in from
Zack Kristy (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) from the near sideline was loose in the box. As a UWW player attempted to settle it, a UCSC defender intitiated contact at the referee immediately blew his whistle signaling for the penalty kick.
Faizan Mohiuddin (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) stepped to the 'X' and directed the ball into the low right side of the net as the Banana Slugs' keeper dove left.
King held the advantage for UWW with a save in teh 83rd minute to seal the win.
With the win, the Warhawks advance to face top-seeded Christopher Newport in a semifinal of the C2C Championship slated for Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
The other quarterfinal Thursday saw UW-Platteville upset by Salisbury on penalty kicks. The host institution advances to face the number two seed, Mary Washington at 1 p.m. CT Friday. The winners of the two semifinals will face off for the C2C Championship Sunday at 9 a.m. CT.
