The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's volleyball team split a pair of matches played in Menomonie Saturday. The Warhawks extended their win streak over league foe UW-Stout with a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19) win before falling to Northwestern (MN) 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 29-31, 15-12).
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) carried the Warhawks in the first set against the Blue Devils with a phenomenal performance from the service line with six aces. Despite being outhit in the set, UW-W's seven aces bolstered the 25-19 first set win.
Adding another ace in set two, Sotiros became the first Warhawk to record at least seven service aces in a single match since Tessa Weber tallied seven against St. Norbert in 2014. UW-W was more efficient offensively but the Blue Devils hit over .500 in the set to win 25-23 and even the match 1-1.
The Warhawks bounced back to take the next two sets 25-23 and 25-15. UW-Whitewater extended the win streak against UW-Stout to 35 matches dating back to October of 1994 with the victory.
Sotiros ended up with eight aces, the fourth-most recorded in program history for a single match.
Offensively,
Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie),
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and
Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) all registered double digit kills with 12, 11 and 10 respectively.
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) bolstered the defense with 11 digs.
In UW-W's second match of the day, the Warhawks battled with Northwestern-St. Paul. As the scores suggest, the teams were fairly even throughout the match.
