The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team opens the 2021 regular season this Saturday, Sept. 4, against Carthage, a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, for a non-conference affair at 1 p.m. at Perkins Stadium. Prior to the game, UW-Whitewater will recognize its 2020 and 2021 senior classes.

The Warhawks enter the new campaign after finishing the 2019 year with a share of the program's 37th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, the program's 10th trip to the Stagg Bowl and a 13-2 record. Head coach Kevin Bullis, a two-time WIAC Coach of the Year and a winner of 57 games in his first five seasons, returns at the helm of the program.

The Warhawks are ranked second by Lindy's and fourth by D3football.com and College Football America entering the new season. UW-Whitewater garnered 565 points and one first-place vote from D3football.com voters to mark their 14th consecutive appearance among the website's preseason top 15.

Carthage is picked to finish sixth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in 2021 after tying for sixth in the standings in 2019 and posting a 4-6 record, including a 4-5 league mark. The Firebirds were one of 47 teams in college football, including one of 24 in NCAA Division III, to finish the 2020-21 year with an undefeated record, posting victories over North Park and Millikin in the pandemic-shortened spring campaign.

NOTABLE

  • UW-Whitewater is 33-3 in non-conference games in August and September over the last 12 seasons (2008-19). Two of the losses came during the 2017 season, with the other coming in 2012. The Warhawks finished both of those seasons with a 7-3 record.
  • The Warhawks' 2020 and 2021 senior classes helped UW-Whitewater to a 26-3 record over the last two seasons. During that span, the Warhawks are 13-1 in the WIAC with two conference championships, one national semifinal appearance (2018) and the program's 10th trip to the Stagg Bowl (2019).
