The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team won titles at four of the seven singles draws Saturday as play concluded at the two-day Warhawk Fall Invitational at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex.
The tournament included seven teams, five of which were from institutions that award athletic scholarships.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead),
Josh Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS),
Noah Wankerl (Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and
Ridley Aranda (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) finished first in the Nos. 4-7 singles brackets to lead the Warhawks.
Pietila didn't drop a set on his way to the No. 4 title, defeating Nicolas Palacio of Cardinal Stritch, the bracket's top seed, by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Guillermo won a third-set super tiebreaker against St. Francis in the semifinals to punch his ticket to the No. 5 final, where he topped teammate
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) in straight sets.
Wankerl dropped the first set of his semifinal against Cardinal Stritch before taking the second set and a super tiebreaker in the third, and defeated teammate
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) in the final by a 6-1, 6-3 count to win the No. 6 bracket.
Aranda posted three straight-set victories in the No. 7 draw, including a 7-6 (5), 6-2 triumph against teammate
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) in the final.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) joined Adkisson, Hearne and Aranda as top-three finishers, placing third in the No. 3 draw. Mitchell was edged in three sets in his semifinal against Cardinal Stritch, but recovered with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Olivet Nazarene in the final.
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) finished fourth at the Nos. 1 and 2 brackets, respectively.
UW-Whitewater continues its fall season next week Sunday, Sept. 19, at Carthage's Battle of the Birds Invite. Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. in Kenosha.
