The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team began its 2021-22 season Friday on the first day of the Warhawk Fall Invitational at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex.
The Warhawks placed among the top four in all four doubles draws, and own spots in the semifinals in six of the singles draws, including multiple qualifiers in three draws.
Five of the seven teams competing at this weekend's tournament are scholarship programs.
Josh Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) finished as runner-up in the No. 3 bracket, earning a pair of wins before being edged in a tiebreaker in the final by Cardinal Stritch.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) combined for a third-place finish at No. 2. The duo dropped its semifinal by a 6-4 score against Cardinal Stritch, but recovered for a 6-2 triumph against Lake Forest to earn a spot in the top three.
At No. 1,
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) posted a victory in their first match before dropping their second. The pair was edged in a tiebreaker in the third-place match against Lewis University.
In the four-team No. 4 draw, UW-Whitewater earned both spots in the final.
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and
Noah Wankerl (Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) topped teammates
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Ridley Aranda (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) 6-4 in the title match.
Players advancing to the semifinals of their respective singles brackets include Zakowski at No. 1, Lindwall at No. 2, Mitchell at No. 3, Pietila at No. 4, Adkisson and Guillermo at No. 5, Wankerl and
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) at No. 6, and Aranda and Baldwin at No. 7.
Play continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in Whitewater.
