No. 8 Baseball Wins Eighth Straight

The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team posted two more Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories Friday, defeating Finlandia (Mich.) in a doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
 
The Warhawks (27-4 overall, 19-3 WIAC) won both games by run rule in seven innings, topping the Lions 19-0 in the opener before taking Game 2 by a 14-0 score.
 
In Game 1, UW-Whitewater totaled 20 hits and used seven-run frames in the second and fourth to break open the contest.
 
Centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington), second baseman Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest), shortstop Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), first baseman Taylor White (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge), left fielder Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) and designated hitter Peter Turelli (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) each registered two hits. Santoro and Korman tallied two runs scored and two runs batted in apiece, while Turelli hit a three-run homer and finished with a team-best four RBIs. White plated three runs, and right fielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) and third baseman Bryan Sturdevant (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) each drove in a pair.
 
Second baseman Jason Abatto (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) hit a solo homer and scored two runs, and third baseman Tucker Criswell (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) finished with one hit, two walks and three runs scored.
 
Starting pitcher Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)) improved to 7-0 on the year with seven strikeouts in his five innings of work. Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) tossed two innings of relief, striking out four without allowing a hit.
 
In the second game, the Warhawks collected 19 more hits and scored runs in five of their six at-bats. A six-run sixth inning was highlighted by a long home run by White, his team-leading fifth of the year.
 
White finished with three hits, including a single and a triple to go with his homer, and knocked in two runs. Santoro (3x5, 2 R), Vomhof (2x5, 2 R), Korman and first baseman Connor Moroder (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) also tallied two RBIs apiece. DeMeyer registered two hits and two runs scored, and Turelli reached base three times with two walks and one hit.
 
Starting pitcher Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) struck out nine batters over five innings to improve to 8-0. Trey Bretl (Marinette, Wis./Marinette), Vomhof and Jim Jarecki (New Berlin, Wis./Marquette University HS) combined for two innings of scoreless relief.
 
UW-Whitewater and Finlandia (0-30, 0-22) continue their weekend series Saturday with two more conference games. First pitch at Miller Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
