No. 8 Warhawk Baseball Earns Two More Wins

The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team maintained its first-place standing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon with consecutive victories over UW-Stout in a doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (23-4 overall, 15-3 WIAC), who are tied for first place in the conference standings with UW-Stevens Point, posted a 10-1 triumph in the opener before defeating the Blue Devils 7-0 in the nightcap.

In Game 1, UW-Whitewater mashed 15 hits and put up six runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning to break the game open. Left fielder Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union), catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac), centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington), second baseman Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and third baseman Tucker Criswell (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) each delivered run-scoring hits in the frame.

Korman bunted a run home in the third, and shortstop Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) scored on a double play ground ball to make it 8-0 in the fifth.

UW-Stout (12-14, 8-10) got on the board in the top of the sixth, but the Warhawks responded with two in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Vomhof and an RBI single off the bat of Criswell.

Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)) earned the win to improve to 6-0 on the year, scattering seven hits over eight innings with four strikeouts. Ben Muscatello (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning.

Vomhof and first baseman Connor Moroder (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) paced the offense with three hits apiece. Vomhof, Santoro and Campbell each scored two runs.

In Game 2, four UW-W pitchers combined for a shutout, stranding nine Blue Devil runners in the contest.

Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) moved to 7-0 for the season with another strong performance, scattering six hits with 14 strikeouts over seven innings, tied for the fifth-most strikeouts in one game in program history.

Kade Lancour (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Moroder and Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) combined for a perfect ninth.

Criswell finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Moroder also plated a pair of runs. Campbell totaled two hits and two runs scored, and Santoro posted two hits, one run scored and one RBI. Korman and outfielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) also registered one RBI apiece.
