The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team recorded its third straight win Wednesday night, downing UW-Stout 76-51 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Menomonie, Wis.
The Warhawks (5-2 overall, 5-2 WIAC) held the Blue Devils to 31 percent shooting in the contest and held a 50-34 advantage in total rebounds, including a 20-12 margin on the offensive glass. UW-W also forced 26 turnovers, including 17 on steals.
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) continued her strong play with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting to go along with four rebounds.
Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) posted 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) finished with nine points, three rebounds and three steals, and
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) collected nine points and six rebounds. Up front,
Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) totaled eight points, and
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) contributed eight rebounds and eight blocks, tied for the sixth-most in one game in program history, to go along with her five points.
After being held scoreless for the first three minutes, 30 seconds of the contest, the Warhawks tallied the final 19 points of the first quarter, including six from Grundahl, five from
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) and four from Belschner, for a 17-point lead.
UW-Whitewater maintained its double-digit lead in the second quarter, but UW-Stout whittled its deficit down to 10 points by halftime thanks to a 3-pointer in the final minute.
The Warhawks tallied the first nine points of the third to increase their lead to 40-21 by the 8:33 mark of the period. UW-W led by 20 or more for most of the final five minutes in the quarter, and Belschner scored the last four points to give the team a 62-34 lead headed to the fourth.
UW-Whitewater built its lead as high as 30 points in the final quarter, finishing the game with advantages in points off turnovers (28-15), points in the paint (46-22), second-chance points (15-5) and fast-break points (22-8).
The Warhawks and Blue Devils take the court again this Friday at Kachel Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Seniors
