For the second straight game, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team took advantage of strong play in the first and third quarters, defeating UW-Stout 77-52 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.
In their regular season finale, the Warhawks (6-2 overall, 6-2 WIAC) also recognized seniors
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) and
Adriana Wood (Racine, Wis./Horlick), who played their last regular season game on the home floor. Both Schumacher and Wood were a part of three NCAA Tournament appearances, two WIAC regular season championships and the 2018 conference tournament title during their four-year careers.
Wood recorded 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter, when the Warhawks outscored the Blue Devils 28-14. She also added four steals. Schumacher collected 13 points and three steals.
UW-Whitewater forced 28 turnovers by UW-Stout and totaled 22 steals as a team. The Warhawks shot 45.7 percent from the floor and held the Blue Devils to 37.3 percent shooting.
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) finished 7-of-8 from the field to finish with 14 points, three rebounds and five blocks.
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) contributed eight points, and
Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) tallied seven.
Wood and Schumacher combined to hit four 3-pointers over the first 3:22 of the game, helping UW-Whitewater jump out to a 14-4 advantage. The Warhawks used full-court pressure to carry their double-digit advantage late in the quarter and doubled up the Blue Devils entering the second.
A 3-pointer by
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) gave the Warhawks a 15-point lead early in the second quarter, and the team's lead never dipped below 10 in the period.
UW-Whitewater allowed only three made field goals in the third quarter as it extended its advantage. Taylor's layup at the 2:04 mark gave the Warhawks their largest lead of the game to that point at 56-33.
UW-Whitewater maintained its lead throughout the fourth quarter. Trautsch and
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the frame.
The Warhawks and Blue Devils return to Kachel Gymnasium Monday at 7 p.m. for the first round of the WIAC Championship. UW-Whitewater is the No. 2 seed from the East Division, while UW-Stout is the No. 3 seed out of the West.
