The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team took advantage of a strong start offensively and forced 22 turnovers on the other end Friday night in a 64-53 victory over UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game inside Kachel Gymnasium.
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) totaled 22 points, including 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, and added six rebounds to lead the Warhawks (4-2 overall, 4-2 WIAC).
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two blocks and two steals.
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) contributed nine points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench.
Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) recorded six points and seven rebounds.
UW-Whitewater held advantages of 17-10 in points off turnovers, 15-3 in second-chance points and 12-4 in fast-break points.
The Warhawks tallied 24 first-quarter points, converting 10-of-22 from the floor, while the Pioneers hit 8-of-14 from the floor for 20 points in the period.
UW-Platteville tied the game just under a minute into the second, but a 3-pointer by
Kailey Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) started a 10-0 run to give UW-W a 36-26 lead just over halfway through the quarter. The Warhawks took an eight-point lead into halftime.
UW-Whitewater led by as many as 16 in the third. A 3-pointer by
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) with under a minute to play in the period gave the team a 48-33 advantage heading to the final quarter.
The Warhawks' lead ballooned to 19 early in the fourth before the Pioneers chipped away, reducing their deficit to 54-47 at the midway point of the quarter.
UW-W hit 9-of-10 from the free-throw line to maintain its lead.
UW-Whitewater closes the regular season next week with games against UW-Stout. Wednesday's game in Menomonie is set to tip off at 7 p.m.
