The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team withstood a game-winning shot attempt in the final seconds of regulation and made critical plays in overtime Wednesday night for a 71-68 triumph at UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) recorded a career-high 25 points, including eight in the extra period, and added 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks for her second career double-double to lead the Warhawks (3-2 overall, 3-2 WIAC), who outscored the Pioneers on points in the paint (40-26) and fast-break points (14-6).

Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) totaled a season-high 12 points and added two steals, and Maggie Trautch posted 10 points. Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) collected nine points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals, and Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) contributed nine points off the bench.

UW-Platteville (1-4, 1-4) led 13-9 after the first, overcoming 3-of-15 shooting in the quarter with six made free throws.

UW-Whitewater responded with a strong second quarter, turning a 22-13 deficit into a 24-22 advantage by holding the Pioneers scoreless for a stretch of nearly six minutes. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Trautsch and Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater), followed by a jumper by Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South), gave the Warhawks a 32-24 lead in the final minute of the half, and UW-W led by eight at halftime.

The Pioneers climbed their way back into the game in the third, tying the game at the midway point of the quarter at 40-40. UW-P led by as many as five in the frame, but Emily Schumacher's (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) 3-pointer and four straight points by Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) gave UW-W the lead back at 49-47 with just over a minute to play in the period. UW-Platteville led 50-49 heading to the fourth.

The Warhawks built a five-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, but UW-Platteville crept back into the game, taking a two-point advantage in the final minute.

Taylor tied the game with just over 30 seconds left on a shot in the paint, and the Pioneers' final shot attempt bounced off the rim and out.

UW-Platteville took the first lead of the overtime, but Grundahl scored UW-W's first six points of overtime, including a pair of free throws with 2:18 remaining to put UW-Whitewater ahead for good.

Taylor and Trautsch hit a free throw apiece to help the Warhawks maintain their lead, and Grundahl hit two more with four seconds left.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Platteville take the court again this Friday at 7 p.m. in Whitewater. The Warhawks will wear pink uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness.
