The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team was outlasted Friday by a 2-1 score in double overtime at Mary Washington in a semifinal match of the 2021 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Warhawks (15-6-1 overall) tallied the first goal of the contest in the fourth minute as
Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) found the back of the net on a pass from
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake).
UW-Whitewater attempted four more shots on goal in the first half, but the Eagles (10-5-2) tied the match in the 41st minute.
The Warhawks continued their attack early in the second half, posting two more shots on goal in the first 10-plus minutes of the period. Mary Washington out-shot UW-Whitewater 9-5 and held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal in the half.
The Eagles earned corner kicks in the 80th and 81st minutes, the second of which led to a shot, but neither team put a shot on target over the final 10 minutes as the match headed to extra time.
Mary Washington tried the only shot in the first overtime and collected the only two shots of the second overtime. The second of the two attempts went over the head of goalkeeper
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) and into the back of the net in the 107th minute.
King finished with 12 saves. Wright attempted a team-high five shots, including three on goal.
Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee),
Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and
Alec Sykes (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Hale) tried two shots apiece.
Holley and King were named to the C2C Championship All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of play.
The Eagles, who advance to face top-seeded Christopher Newport in Saturday's tournament final, finished with a 25-12 advantage in shots, including a 14-8 margin in shots on goal.
The Warhawks conclude the 2021 season with a 10-6 record in true road games and played 17 of their 22 matches away from Fiskum Field, where they posted a 4-0-1 mark.
